General health: A foundation for workplace support
General health: Why it matters
When we begin a Workplace Needs Assessment, general health is one of the most important areas to examine, not just whether someone is “well,” but how their body and mind feel daily.
Health factors, whether physical, emotional, or neurological, shape how we show up at work. Chronic fatigue, pain, mental health challenges, or long-term stress may be things someone has quietly worked around for years.
This part of the assessment helps you understand what’s been going on beneath the surface and what support might help.
It also opens up space to explore traits someone might not have labelled, such as attention difficulties, sensory overwhelm, or social exhaustion.
Whether someone has a diagnosis or something’s affecting their work, it’s worth understanding.
General health: What to think about
- Have you experienced long-term or fluctuating health conditions that impact your work?
- Are there ways your day-to-day functioning differs from others, even if you’ve never been diagnosed?
- Have you had any screening or assessments (formal or informal) in the past, and what did you take from them?
- What was school or university like? Were there adjustments or interventions that helped?
- Are there things you’ve been “just coping with” for a long time?
These insights can shape meaningful, practical recommendations not just for equipment or tools but also for sustainable ways of working.
